very kindly by the author and I had been saving it specifically for my
holiday. I started reading it on the flight over and literally couldn't put
it down until I'd finished it.
Precious Thing is a very clever book, and I must say, I am partial to a clever book. It is exceptionally well written for a debut novel and I can't wait to read Colette McBeth's second novel when it released next year.
Rachel Walsh works in television, she is a successful career woman whom any woman would envy. She has a beautiful residence, a loving partner and a fabulous career. She is a far cry from the shy and awkard girl that made friends with one of the most popular girls in school on her first day.
Clara is Rachel's best friend. She was always the glamorous one, the adventurous one, the beautiful one. And although admittedly they haven't seen each other "properly" for a few years, Rachel thinks that Clara has changed beyond recognition. Their roles have almost reversed.
When Rachel walks into a press conference one morning to find Clara's photo staring back at her, her world falls apart.
Clara is missing and has sparked a massive manhunt as the local police fear for her safety.
Trying to remain professional for the sake of her job Rachel doesn't let on that she knows Clara at first, until she thinks she might be able to help.
It throws her into the middle of the police investigation in a way that she never could have imagined.
Rachel begins to wonder if this is what Clara was after all along. She always did love being the centre of attention after all.
